.
Here is my "capsize report":
I own my F82R since 2015 and I had a lot of fun modifying it since then: deeper rudder, slef built C-foils, modified F85SR-floats (longer and with additional volume at the stern), self tacking jib, bigger daggerboard and the 12,2 m home built carbon wing mast (chord /width 2,8:1). The boat can clearly carry more load than a standard F82.
I love singlehandling my boat and thought I had gathered enough experience, which was not the case for the conditions in this years Silverrudder race, in which I competed the 10th time now. I have considered my boat being a robust and stable platform throughout the whole history together and finished the Midusmmersail race through the Baltic (930 nm singlehanded) 3 times. With gennakers I had some nose dives in this history but I was always able to stay away from serious problems by quickly bearing off and blowing the gennaker sheet.
After leaving the Svendborg Sound the wind was stable between 13 and 17 kn, the sun was shining and soon I figured that the boat was too slow downwind with main and jib only. There were warnings about strong gusts but for later during the day and more in the North of Fyn. So I decided to hoist my small A5 gennaker (45 m²) and everything went well with the leeward C-foil down. I thought that I could still take the A5 down when the conditions get worse. The C-foil provides a lot of dynamic lift and increases the safety when sailing downwind. Sometimes the leeward bow is above the water but I adjusted the rake for the float bow being 1/3rd in the water at full speed. During this years Midsummersail race I also tested to let the autopilot (Raymarine EV100 with a Calypso ultrasonic windsensor at the bowsprit) steer the boat with gennaker up, steering to apparent wind and it worked quite fine. Not perfect though.
But in this race I mostly steered by hand. Main sheet was in the cleat, gennaker, jib and main well trimmed for the downwind course and the gennaker sheet was 2 turns on the winch with its end in a curry cleat, the end of the sheet on my knees. Then a "smaller " gust hit the boat and I beared off quickly. The boat slowed down and when I began to head up again and accelerating a second and much stronger gust hit me. The boat suffered a brutal nosedive with all 3 bows being submerged until the mast in (I guess) 2 seconds and the boat immediately reached the point of no return, where gravity takes over. I must say that I had a kind of total blackout and I didn´t even think of blowing the sheets, because it all happened so quickly. Instead I stared at the wind sensor!
Then the boat capsized quite slowly, the mast hit the water and began sinking as I was able to climb over the transom in a controlled matter. When it turned upside down I had to jump into the water but i managed to get on the wing net very quickly and only my legs were wet. And then I stood there admiring the smooth surface of the bottom of the boat and felt super stupid.
Chris Kedborn (Corsair Dash) and Frank Wiese (F25C) came by and stayed close, alarmed the SAR and the Silverrudder safety comittee. When the first rib came I informed them that I am dry, warm and not injured. Their second question was: "What is your plan?" I was very relieved that they didn´t intend to take me off my boat and therefore, I was able to stay in control what happens with the capsized boat. I told them that we have to right the boat and asked for a long line. Chris gave them his gennaker sheet. I routed a bridle to the forward beams and when the second rib (with 2 x 150 hp outboard motors) came I stepped over, we connected a longer line to the bridle and I asked them to pull straight in direction of the centreline of the boat. I remembered that the boat should be pulled upwind for righting but in thiss moment I didn´t remember why! So we pulled, I said stronger, more, more! The stern of the main hull buried and the boat came back up slowly with bow up, splashing down on even keel and started sailing immediately with 10 kn as the sheets were still cleated! That was the reason why to pull against the wind! But it was a beautiful sight and I have never seen my boat from outside before! The pulling lines were still attached and the powerful trimaran tore the rib sideways and it already heeled a lot. The elbow of one of the guys was already in the water as they speeded up to get in front of my boat to pull the bow back into the wind. I stepped over to the other rib and they brought me back to my boat. I had to jump again, a lot of jumps today and started to tear down the sails while the SAR rib pulled me back to Svendborg harbour. There was water in the boat up to 10 cm below the seat level only, but a complete mess, the toilet paper roll had dissolved and a lot of my belongings had been splashed out of the boat.
There is no damage to the boat or the mast, although it must have been sticking in the mud for a while. Only the electronics are completely destroyed.
But I will start again in Silverrudder 2027. The insurance is informed and I am positive that the destroyed electronics will be covered, so the boat will be better than before;)
And I hope being a better sailor afterall..
What went wrong?
1. I wanted too much and haven´t sailed for two months before the race. The capsize happened during my first hour of sailing after two month and I guess my reflexes were rusty.
2. I partly ignored the weather forecast and therefore, too much sail area up
3. Overestimation of my high wind capabilities and experiences. (Actually I never encountered such gusts before)
4. Gennaker sheet was NOT in my hand
5. Dynamic lift of the C-foil only exists at speed. When the boat was slow after the first gust I had not enough dynamic lift to support the bow, so I was caught by the second gust "kind of defenseless" and in lack of righting moment.
6. I looked onto my instruments too much instead of looking out for gusts. In this kind of condition I should better switch them off.
